SOME OF THE SIX GORILLAS IN OUWEHANDS ZOO
The western lowland gorilla lives in family groups consisting of a number of immature males and females with and without young, led by an adult male, the silverback. The gorilla owes its thick belly to the extensive intestinal system, which ensures the digestion of the plant food. There is no fixed mating time. The gestation period is nine months. The gorilla pup drinks until it is about two years old with the mother. The gorilla is threatened because its habitat is becoming smaller as a result of logging and mining industry. Just like many other jungle inhabitants, the gorilla is hunted for "bush meat", a luxury delicacy.
