MING HOU CHEN

Ming Hou Chen was born in The Hague on September 24, 1947.

Simplicity is essential in the work of Ming Hou Chen. As a glass artist he plays with mirror effects, lights and free forms. His abstract glass cubes and rectangles show an optical distortion of reality. The effects that arise when the glass is engraved on two interfaces is what makes the works so special.

Chen uses his own, unique way of working glass. It is a delicate craft, which requires careful handling to make the glass surface as pure as possible. The cast blocks of optical glass are cut to size and then ground and polished. Optical glass is completely pure, so that every scratch and unevenness can be seen. Chen works on a sculpture until the glass is completely clear.

He also uses techniques such as glassblowing and glass casting, which gives his oeuvre a versatile character. Chen's work can be divided from figurative to abstract and takes many forms.

Ming Hou Chen is geboren in Den Haag op 24 september 1947.

In het werk van Ming Hou Chen is eenvoud essentieel. Als glaskunstenaar speelt hij met spiegeleffecten, lichten en vrije vormen. Zijn asbstracte glaskubussen en rechthoeken tonen een optische verdraaiing van de werkelijkheid. De effecten die ontstaan wanneer het glas op twee grensvlakken wordt gegraveerd, is wat de werken zo bijzonder maakt. 

Chen gebruikt zijn eigen, unieke manier van glasbewerken. Het is een delicaat ambacht, waarbij voorzichtig te werk moet worden gegaan om het glasoppervlak zo zuiver mogelijk te krijgen. De gegoten blokken optisch glas worden op maat gesneden en vervolgens geslepen en gepolijst. Optisch glas is volledig zuiver, waardoor elk krasje en oneffenheid te zien is. Chen werkt net zo lang aan een sculptuur totdat het glas volledig helder is. 

Daarnaast gebruikt hij technieken als glasblazen en glasgieten, waardoor zijn oeuvre een veelzijdig karakter heeft. Het werk van Chen is in te delen van figuratief tot abstract en neemt vele vormen aan.
