Eros, erotic, eroticism are just some of the countless words whose original meaning have been forgotten.
In common language they are used to describe something that may cause sexual desire. For the collective imagination an erotic image is distinguished from a pornographic one only for a conceptuality hidden behind it and for having been performed in a more elegant manner.

In 1995, photographic master Guido Argentini was moved to coat a model in silver makeup. The shiny silver paint transformed the models: dancers, gymnasts and aerialists into metallic statues, into new beings that became almost liquid like under the studio lights. Evoking the luminous polished planes of the work of Brancusi and the verve of Degas’ ballet sketches, these photographs endow the human body with both the solidity of sculpture and the vivid energy of dance. In een bespiegeling over zijn werk zei Joop Polder eens: ‘Al mijn schilderijen hebben voor mij de titel “de droom” ’. In de titels zelf komt het woord droom nooit voor. Zij verwijzen naar een station, een gracht, een tramtoren, een enkele tram of spreken van een late namiddag, een uitzicht of stilte. Het werk is figuratief: alles is herkenbaar en alles is imaginair; zijn stadsgezichten, zijn duinen en zee, zijn trams bestaan alleen in zijn werk. ‘Ik zoek in mijn schilderijen een verdroomde wereld vol warmte en veiligheid’. In deze wereld is het stil, de beweging heeft zich teruggetrokken. Dit boek is deel 24 van de serie Haags Palet uitgegeven door de Stichting Haagse Beeldende Kunst en Kunstnijverheid.


In tuin van de gesoigneerde, typisch Haagse kunstschilder 1939) bloeien geen bloemen maar staan een tram en een muziekstandaard. Joop Polder schilderde een gedroomde wereld met uitzichten op een station, een terras, de duinen en de zee, altijd uit zijn verstrooide verbeelding en toch heel herkenbaar. Geen spoor van een verfgebaar, slechts de tonen van het licht, van kleur en schaduw toveren een vervreemde architectuur met loepzuivere elementen van klassieke zuilen samen met metalen bruggen en chique trams en een net echt half gevuld wijnglas op het bordes. Dat alles is verbonden door typerende perspectiefwisselingen. De metafysische schilders deden het Joop Polder voor. Bij zijn 70e verjaardag, begin 2009, kwam het idee op voor dit innemende boekje met afbeeldingen van vooral na de jaren negentig. Een conservator van het Haags Gemeentemuseum beschrijft de ontwikkeling van leven en werk, even helder maar wel verifieerbaar, als de schone schijn. Een biografie, tentoonstellingslijst en enige gememoreerde publicaties besluiten dit deel in de serie Haags Palet. Echt een delicatesse voor Hagenezen.
