KEVIN LANGEDIJK PAINTINGS

Kevin Langedijk (1982) was trained as a graphic designer. At a young age, he developed an interest in the colorful visual language of American comics. Drawn to the dynamic world of advertising and inspired by pop art artists, he chose to study multimedia and design in Rotterdam.

His career has always placed him at the intersection of the commercial business world and the art scene. As a designer, he worked for various clients in cities such as Singapore, Rome, and London, where he gained firsthand experience in the international world of fashion and lifestyle brands.

In addition to comics and lifestyle brands, Langedijk draws inspiration from artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jeff Koons, and Banksy. This influence is reflected in his vibrant work, best described as a fusion of pop art, neo-pop, and graffiti.

Since 2012, Langedijk has been creating artworks that reflect his sharp observations of consumer society. He works on commission and produces personal pieces. His work is featured in renowned galleries in cities such as Paris, Knokke, Ibiza, Naples (Florida – USA), and Schiedam.

Girls Crying for Roy Lichtenstein

Pop art is where it all began for me. Everything I create carries that recognizable pop-art aesthetic. But whereas classic pop art is often quite simple, I’m always looking for something extra: more layers, more depth, more story. I want the image to be more complex than it first appears.

That’s how the idea was born to blow up classic comics into large, powerful images. In the series I'm currently showing, you’ll see iconic pop-art elements—like the crying girls we know from Roy Lichtenstein—but with a feminine twist. I place them in a new context, using pastel tones and a nod to the 1980s Miami Vice aesthetic.

What makes these paintings special is that they are entirely composed of vintage comics. I collect hundreds of old comic books, carefully selecting and combining them to form a new image. By playing with light and shadow, depth emerges in the work, giving each painting a unique character—nostalgic, yet completely contemporary.

Velvet Lyrics

This series consists of paintings in which text takes center stage – a mix of calligraphy and design, embossed through the panel. Each piece is created entirely in a single soft pink hue, framed by a sleek white frame. The choice of color is intentional: the pink gives the works a gentle, almost touchable quality, adding a sense of vulnerability. This contrasts with the sometimes cheeky, ambiguous nature of the texts.

The words are fragments of song lyrics from bands like Royal Blood and The Fixx – phrases from the 1980s and 1990s that linger in the mind. They are open to interpretation: sensual, playful, and just a little provocative. Everyone reads something different into them.

To me, these are artworks meant for the bedroom – above a bed, in a white room, with crisp white bedding. They are pieces that don’t shout, but whisper. Intimate, stylish, and personal.

KISS my Moss

Explosive colors, sharp contrasts, grids full of rhythm — this series is an ode to the nineties, Miami vibes, neon nights, and raw edges. At the heart of the works: Kate Moss. She has been my muse for years. Not just because of her iconic status in the fashion world, but especially because of her bold, nonchalant attitude. She’s always walking the line between chaos and cool. Not a flawless doll, but a powerful image. And that fits perfectly with what I aim to capture in this series.

The paintings are built up from thousands of dots, carefully placed in a tight grid. This technique gives them a graphic look, as if you're looking at a printed poster or an old-school magazine — but infused with a new kind of energy. Everything pops: the colors, the attitude, the gaze. These are images that walk straight into your room.

This work is about power, about style, about the seduction of the image. It's joyful and intense at the same time. Miami meets Camden. Pop culture meets personality. And always with a bold wink to fashion, media, and the muse.

Designer Highs

The idea for these works emerged during one of the first evenings the bar was allowed to reopen, right in the middle of lockdown. As I sat there, something caught my attention: how obsessively some men were focused on what they were wearing. Designer brands from head to toe, coordinated down to the smallest detail. And the moment someone walked in wearing slightly more expensive sneakers or a more exclusive jacket, you could see the disappointment on their faces. Everything revolved around status. Not about what you did, but how you looked. It almost felt like an addiction — not to a substance, but to the feeling of being seen.

That’s how the idea for my wooden XTC pills came about: perfectly shaped tablets featuring logos of high-end fashion brands. Each pill is handcrafted from layered plywood — glued, sanded, and finished with a matte spray coating reminiscent of real pills.

The first series was immediately picked up by a gallery in Miami and shown at Art Basel — one of the largest art fairs in the world. There, they weren’t just exhibited, but also sold right away. Since then, the project has gained serious momentum. It’s been going incredibly well in the Netherlands too, and I’ve already created and sold hundreds of pills.

What makes the work unique is its modularity: collectors create their own compositions. You start with a few pills and gradually build your own collection. This results in a personal, visual mix of brands, colors, and shapes — a style statement, just like fashion itself.

The collection now includes around sixty designs, but anything is possible. It’s a playful, critical commentary on fashion addiction and luxury as identity — captured in something that, at first glance, appears light, colorful, and almost humorous.

Color Bombs

When I first started painting, I created a lot of abstract work built up from thousands of lines, dots, and specks – individual colors that together formed a cohesive whole. These pieces sold well, especially to companies looking for something colorful and positive, without an overly explicit message.

For this exhibition, I wanted to return to that style, but this time with a statement. The result is Color Bomb: a colorful, graphic piece in which the cheerful dots have been replaced by hand grenades. The work is presented in a sleek plexiglass box measuring 80 by 80 centimeters, containing around 100 hand grenades in soft pastels and vibrant colors.

From a distance, it looks like a cheerful, almost festive artwork. But up close, the viewer sees what’s really depicted. And that’s exactly the message: how the world often looks beautiful and fun at first glance – think Instagram and the perfect image – while beneath the surface, much more is going on. The threat is there, but it's well-disguised. It could explode at any moment.

Color Bomb is a playful confrontation between form and content, between aesthetics and reality. A piece that raises questions precisely because it initially presents itself as so accessible.

Sweet but deadly

In this series of six paintings, the hand grenade takes center stage — an object we increasingly encounter in the news. They appear at front doors, in the streets, used as threats within criminal networks. Quite intense, actually. But what happens when you suddenly see such an explosive object in bright, cheerful colors?

Using a grid technique, I carefully constructed the grenades and colored them with vibrant, almost festive shades. At first glance, they seem almost playful — colorful, sleek, appealing. But beneath that surface, the threat remains: the danger of explosion, the fear, the control.

That contrast fascinates me. How something can look cheerful but actually represent something dark. It's a nod to how we sometimes grow used to violence in the news — it becomes almost normal, even though it absolutely shouldn’t be.

ICON no.5

Big. Sparkling. Unmistakable. These works are an ode to the icon of all icons: the Chanel No. 5 bottle. But not as you know it.

Enlarged and adorned with gold leaf and glitter – this is not perfume, this is a statement. In vibrant shades of azure, pink, and purple,

this bottle bursts off your wall like a contemporary relic.

Pop art meets high fashion. Chanel No. 5, reborn as an eye-catcher. For everyone who once smelled the original – and now wants to hang the artwork.

SEE BEYOND COLOR

Green represents calm, yellow stands for warmth, and blue symbolizes trust. It’s tempting to think of colors in stereotypes. However, the value we attach to color—and the emotions they evoke—differs from person to person. For instance, red is not only linked to love, warmth, and strength but is also associated with anger and urgency. For some, it brings energy; for others, it may cause restlessness.

We all have a favorite color that makes us feel good. The works from the series ‘See beyond color’ are composed of a multitude of colors and radiate a sense of joy and vitality. With these works, Langedijk invites us to look beyond our favorite color and open ourselves to new color combinations that can spark feelings of happiness.

In ABKL we trust

WE CAN BE HEROES

We can be heroes.

VIRTUES AND VICES
