His sculptures can be found in private collections, galleries, and public spaces, and he continues to create both original works and bespoke commissions for collectors worldwide.
Peter Ter Maten – Master Sculptor of Carrara Marble
For acclaimed Dutch sculptor Peter Ter Maten, every sculpture begins with a profound dialogue between artist and stone. The journey starts with selecting a block of marble, discovering a vision within it, and experiencing the anticipation of seeing a hidden form gradually emerge from the raw material. Each strike of the chisel carries both excitement and risk, balancing inspiration with the ever-present possibility of failure. The marks left behind by the tools, the unexpected character of the stone, and even its mysteries and imperfections become an essential part of the creative process.
After graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts Artibus in 1974, Peter Ter Maten spent a decade working in the advertising industry as a visualizer and art director. However, his passion for sculpture ultimately led him to pursue a different path.
In 1987, armed with little more than two chisels, a hammer, and a determination to master the craft, he moved to Italy. There he met a traditional sculptor who had inherited the profession from his father. Under this master's guidance, Peter spent six years learning the centuries-old techniques of marble carving, gaining an authentic classical Italian education in sculpture.
His deep understanding of marble, particularly the world-famous Carrara marble used by masters such as Michelangelo, is reflected in every piece he creates. His sculptures combine technical excellence with emotion, elegance, and timeless beauty.
Back in Amsterdam, Peter successfully managed Galerie Statua, where his own sculptures were exhibited alongside other notable works. Today, as a classically trained Italian-style sculptor, he creates both original sculptures and exclusive commissioned works for private collectors, galleries, and public spaces.
Owning a sculpture by Peter Ter Maten means acquiring more than a work of art—it is owning a piece of craftsmanship shaped by decades of experience, inspired by the traditions of Italy, and brought to life through the enduring beauty of marble. "Birth of an Angel" is a striking example of this dedication, capturing grace, purity, and the timeless wonder of creation within a single block of Carrara marble.
